What is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety (sometimes referred to as Dental Phobia)  is a perfectly valid normal physiological (body/mind/emotion) response in a healthy person to past trauma that has never been resolved. Dental anxiety can be triggered by a previous frightening or terrifying dental experience.  Although labelled as a phobia, it’s important to understand that this type of anxiety is in no way irrational once understood. The degree of intensity of the anxiety experienced very much correlates to how intense the original experience was. The good news is that, like all phobias and anxieties, dental anxiety is completely treatable and healable.

Signs of Dental Anxiety

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you are likely dealing with dental phobia and anxiety:

  • Do you experience an uneasy feeling when you think about going to the dentist?
  • Do you know that you have a dental issue that needs attention but keep putting off making the appointment?
  • Do you feel a sense of aprehension when you pick up the phone to make the appointment?
  • Do you tell yourself that your mouth must be ok if you don’t have pain?
  • Do you only go to the dentist when you have pain?
  • Do you feel stupid or silly that you feel fear when thinking about the dentist?
  • Are you embarrassed by some aspect of your smile but just put up with it?
  • Do you cover your mouth when you smile so people won’t notice a flaw or cavity in your teeth?
  • Do you try to put up with pain because of the fear of going to the dentist?

Dr. Philip Christie has successfully treated many patients suffering from dental anxiety over the years using his own unique approach. In addition to being a highly experienced dentist, Dr. Christie also has a Masters Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Science. He uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as part of his treatment methods to help patients overcome their dental fears. Once the anxiety treatment sessions have been successfully concluded, it’s time for the patient to then move ahead and get the dental treatment they require.
